For many of us, our annual holiday is something we spend all year looking forward to and as the day approaches, excitement levels are high. But on your first day, you realise this will not be the holiday you had hoped for. You get separated on the plane, one of your bags goes missing so you’re stuck in the same pair of trousers for a week, there is building work outside your hotel window and the weather is worse than if you had stayed at home. For all of us who have stayed at home for our holiday this year, let us delight in the misfortune of others who were so smug before they set off but were laughing on the other side of their faces when they returned with less of a tan than they set off with.

“Everything about our holiday was fine until we stepped into our bedroom at the hotel we were staying. The curtains were falling off the rail, the carpet was covered in stains and the colourful bed linen had all kinds of stains on that I would rather not think about. The couple staying there before us must have had a very good holiday, if you know what I mean.”

“We discovered that we had accidentally booked into a naturist hotel. My mother in law was not impressed.”

“We had a poor start and end to our holiday. Our taxi was so late in collecting us that we missed the outbound flight. We had to move hotel because our room had been overbooked and the replacement was second rate. When they found us a room there was only a single bed and a mattress on the floor. The final kick in the teeth was that our luggage was sent to Heathrow and we flew into Edinburgh.”

“The island we were staying on was like a tropical paradise. Not perfect however, was the infestation of insects that crawled along the beaches, in the bedrooms and in the bathroom, day and night. If I never see another insect I will be happy.“
