The festival commemorates the foiled 'gunpoweder plot' which was designed to overthrow the English government. Guy Fawkes was the leader of the band which hatched the plot. The plot was to kill James I - then King of England - and blow up the houses of parliament. In the end, the group were caught before the bomb could be detinated, and so the plot failed. The festival since then has been a celebration of what England was and what it has been since the event had occurred so many centuries ago.
The history behind Guy Fawkes Day
A film was made of the plot called 'V For Vendetta'. The film caught the essence of the plot and centred on some of the leading characters in the plot. Since the plot was deigned to be treason, the punishment was death. A visionary, Guy Fawkes inspired a group of people to commit the crime, and despite being killed is still held to be something of an inspiational figure. The plot itself is remembered by its day, the 5th of November, the starting lines of the “Remember, Remember the 5th of November…” poem.
