Getting A Child’s Passport Doesn’t Have To Be Frustrating

When applying for a US passport, children and adults share the same basic requirements needed for their passport application. But, there are a few minor differences when it comes to children’s passport applications. They need to submit special requirements that are designed to show proof of their relationship with their parent or guardian, and to establish the identity of the latter two.

Take note that there slight differences in the special requirements between minors under 16 years old, and those 16-17 years old. In this article, we’ll be discussing the requirements of those who are under 16, including newborns and infants. Ready? Let’s continue.

The DS-11 is the most basic requirement that applicants need to accomplish. This is the form that is required to be filled in by everyone applying for a passport for the first time. When filling in this application form, the parents or guardians of the applicant should assist the applicant to ensure everything is filled in correctly.

There’s also the need to establish the citizenship of a passport applicant. To do this, the applicant should submit any of the types of documents accepted by the passport office for the purpose. These documents include: the birth certificate, certificate of citizenship, naturalization certificate, or a consular report of the applicant’s birth if born abroad. The documents submitted will be returned along with the new passport. Sometimes, however, they may be mailed separately.

Then, of course, there’s another basic requirement: two recent color photos. These will then be attached on the appropriate portion on the DS-11. Before having their pictures taken, the parents or guardians should ensure that they are familiar with the specifications of the photos. Otherwise, they can easily visit the US State Department’s website for more information. Alternatively, they could also get in touch with the passport office nearest them.

The items that we have already mentioned in the previous paragraphs are the basic requirements. Again, these are the requirements performed by both adults and minors. We also mentioned that there are special requirements that applicants under 16 have to fulfill. They are needed to establish the relationship between the applicant and parent/guardian, and to establish their identities.

On top of the list of these special requirements is the written parental consent. There are also specific guidelines for this, so it’s best that you check with the passport office before proceeding with this step. The parent/guardian is also required to present an ID when submitting the passport application form. This ID should also be photocopied and attached to the other required documents. Then, finally, the parent/guardian must establish the relationship between them and the applicant. When submitting the passport, the applicable fees must then be paid.

All in all, the steps on Passport For A Minor applications are very straightforward and easy enough to follow. What’s important is that the parent or guardian try to find out beforehand what the specific requirements are. This saves them a lot of time and ensures that they will have a hassle-free Pass Port application.
